민화와 현대서예의 만남

‘마에스트로 MAESTRO’ 특별기획전 개최

대구 남구 대덕문화전당이 2026년 신춘 특별기획전으로 민화와 현대서예의 만남을 선보이는 전시 ‘마에스트로(MAESTRO)’를 개최했다.

이번 전시는 대덕문화전당 블랙큐브 개관을 기념하는 첫 기획전으로, 전통 민화와 현대 서예가 만나 새로운 미적 가능성을 제시하는 자리다.

전시는 2026년 2월 23일부터 3월 14일까지 대덕문화전당 제1·2·3·F 전시실에서 진행된다.

이번 전시는 한국 민화의 전통을 현대적으로 재해석해 온 하당 권정순 작가와 현대서예·서예 퍼포먼스 분야에서 활발한 활동을 펼쳐온 초람 박세호 작가가 함께 참여했다.

민화 작가이자 연구자인 권정순은 오랜 기간 민화의 전통을 계승하며 현대적 감각으로 확장해 온 작가로, 한국민화협회 부회장과 계명대학교 한국민화연구소 소장을 역임하며 민화의 학술적·예술적 발전에도 기여해 왔다.

그의 작품은 전통 민화의 상징성과 색채를 바탕으로 현대적 감각을 더해 새로운 민화의 세계를 구축했다는 평가를 받고 있다.

현대서예가 박세호는 계명대학교 미술대학 서예과와 동대학원 졸업했으며 29여회의 개인전을 연 바 있다.

서예 퍼포먼스 아티스트로서 문자와 이미지의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 선보여 온 그의 작업은 글씨를 단순히 읽는 대상이 아니라 ‘보는 이미지’로 전환시키며, 서예의 표현 영역을 확장하는 실험적인 작품 세계로 주목받고 있다.

이번 전시는 민화와 현대서예라는 서로 다른 장르가 만나 전통과 현대, 회화와 문자, 정적인 이미지와 역동적인 퍼포먼스가 교차하는 예술적 대화를 펼친다.

두 작가의 작품은 각기 다른 예술적 언어를 통해 인간의 삶과 자연, 그리고 시간의 흐름을 담아내며 관람객에게 깊은 울림을 전달한다.

특히 전시는 민화 특유의 민족성과 색채, 그리고 현대서예의 강렬한 필획과 추상적 이미지가 어우러지며 동양 예술의 새로운 미학적 가능성을 보여줄 것으로 기대된다.

대덕문화전당 관계자는 “이번 전시는 한국 전통미술과 현대예술의 경계를 넘나드는 특별한 기획전”이라며 “민화와 서예라는 두 장르의 만남을 통해 관람객들이 전통 예술의 새로운 가치를 발견하는 시간이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

한편 이번 전시는 대덕문화전당 블랙큐브 개관을 기념해 마련된 첫 특별전으로, 지역 예술계뿐 아니라 서예와 민화의 새로운 방향을 제시하는 의미 있는 전시가 될 것으로 기대된다.

The Encounter of Minhwa and Contemporary Calligraphy

“MAESTRO” Special Exhibition Opens

Daedeok Culture Center in Nam-gu, Daegu has opened the 2026 New Year special exhibition “MAESTRO,” presenting an encounter between traditional Minhwa painting and contemporary calligraphy. The exhibition marks the first special project celebrating the opening of the Black Cube at Daedeok Culture Center and offers a platform where traditional folk painting and modern calligraphic art meet to explore new aesthetic possibilities.

The exhibition runs from February 23 to March 14, 2026, and is being held in Exhibition Halls 1, 2, 3, and F of the Daedeok Culture Center.

This exhibition features the works of Kwon Jung Soon (Hadang), an artist who has reinterpreted the tradition of Korean Minhwa in a contemporary way, and Park Se Ho (Choram), a contemporary calligrapher and calligraphic performance artist known for his dynamic artistic practice.

Kwon Jung Soon, a Minhwa artist and researcher, has long worked to preserve and expand the tradition of Minhwa with a modern sensibility. She has served as Vice President of the Korea Minhwa Association and Director of the Korean Minhwa Research Institute at Keimyung University, contributing significantly to both the academic and artistic development of Minhwa. Her works are highly regarded for building a new world of Minhwa by combining traditional symbolism and vivid colors with contemporary interpretation.

Contemporary calligrapher Park Se Ho graduated from the Department of Calligraphy at Keimyung University and its graduate school, and has held around 29 solo exhibitions. As a calligraphic performance artist, he presents works that cross the boundaries between text and image. His artistic practice transforms writing from something merely to be read into something to be visually experienced, expanding the expressive possibilities of calligraphy through experimental and dynamic imagery.

This exhibition presents an artistic dialogue where two different genres—Minhwa and contemporary calligraphy—meet, intersecting tradition and modernity, painting and writing, still imagery and dynamic performance. Through their distinctive artistic languages, the two artists express human life, nature, and the passage of time, offering visitors a profound artistic experience.

In particular, the exhibition highlights the unique national character and vibrant colors of Minhwa, combined with the powerful brushstrokes and abstract imagery of contemporary calligraphy, suggesting new aesthetic possibilities within East Asian art.

A representative of the Daedeok Culture Center stated, “This exhibition is a special project that crosses the boundaries between traditional Korean art and contemporary art. We hope visitors will discover new values in traditional art through the encounter of Minhwa and calligraphy.”

Meanwhile, as the first special exhibition commemorating the opening of the Black Cube at the Daedeok Culture Center, the exhibition is expected to become a meaningful event that suggests new directions for both calligraphy and Minhwa, as well as for the regional art scene.
